Guess the vacation!

Yes, yes, I've been busier than usual. Why? Because we have been planning and preparing for our first family vacation with all four kids.
Wild cheering!!
The last "real" trip we took was about 6 years ago, when we flew to Washington state and spent a couple of days in Canada. My two little boys weren't even born then. And I'm just not counting 2- or 3-day trips to Branson, Missouri or Tulsa, OK. It's too close to be counted as a real trip.
Sooooo, here are your clues...
We'll be driving through three states total, (which includes our own.)

We will be staying by the coast (and I mean, seriously, within 1/4 block of the coastline!)
It will take us two days, or about 16 hours total, to reach our destination. (We have the amazing opportunity to stay in an incredible lake house for one night on the way)
We'll be within rock-throwing distance of a hyper-saline bay. There are only a few in the world.

Guesses?

List Makers Anon.

** I just lost most of this post. It's a test of character, I think. I will NOT retype it all right now, so you'll just have to get the short version. Dang.**
Makin' my list, checkin' in twice...

Remember my 35 Things to do Before I'm 35? You should...it was only about 2 weeks ago.

Well, folks, I have already been able to cross two of my items off the list. I'd say that's pretty good progress thus far. I've got this thing called self-motivation that drives me forward. Yes, it's a quality of most List-Makers. We must have something to cross off. And, honestly, if you are a TRUE born-and-bred list maker, then you will also feel compelled to go back and add things you've already done to the list, just so you can check off those items. It's a sickness.

But we get things done. I'm not competitive by nature, except with The List (which, by the way, is why I added the last item. Must retain sanity.)

#21 Watch local play.
Done. "Fanstasticks" was truly fantastic. Rochelle, you brought down the house with the Ha Ha Ha song.

#6 Canoe. Done. With all four kids. And no tipping. Success.

(short version- sorry- ugh)And, not on the official list: "Nurture the Artist's Love of Horses."
Only crossed off on the Great List In My Head because other people have given their time and resources to bring such joy to a little girl. Look at her face! She is beaming!
Go do some great things!
Ta!

Sketch book re-intro

During that period of over-activity, I neglected my sketchbook (and my downtime.)

For the last few nights, I've been happily penning away before bed, just drawing anything that comes to mind, or any object that strikes me as inspiration.

It feels good to have a pen in my hand again.

These are the latest (click to enlarge):

Building on the Rock

My coffee press (which, yes, deserves its own picture.

I plan on adding watercolor to this one soon.)

I truly believe...

Just draw. Paint. Sew. Make music. Cook. Create. We were made to.

Pruning the tree

The discrepancies between my last few posts dawned on me. I was basking in the quiet slowness, with my family, savoring the little things and, within a week, there was a plunge right into overscheduled stress again. Just crazy how it can happen that fast, in a blink of an eye, and the old patterns pick right back up. Changing a lifestyle truly does take minute-by-minute intention.

In my defense, though, my evenings have remained relatively untouched. For awhile, Fred and I were barely seeing each other. He would go to poker, game nights in Huntsville, or Movie Nights, and I would be off at Cooking Club, Book Club, MUMs events, birthday bashes.... Until we realized that, while it may all be "good stuff," it's certainly not all beneficial to us or our marriage. I love seeing my friends. But I will not choose them over my family. Occasional (like once a week, maybe) evening activities are fine, but it simply can't become a habit to socialize more than spend quality evening time together.

I'll step on toes and go so far as to say that most marriages would be a heck of a lot healthier if both spouses would simply STAY HOME and see each other. Talk, read together, play games. These things are so easily forgotten, left abandoned by the roadside in favor of more "exciting" opportunities. In the end, though, it left us feeling fatigued, frustrated and unfulfilled. The more couples I meet, the more I become convinced that none of us spend nearly enough time with the person we married. Just talking. Savoring. Enjoying, relaxing.

So, here's the heads up for my darling friends: I love you and love spending time with you. Phone calls are often hard for me, because I simply can't ignore my children to have a long conversation. There are four little people needing supervision, help, attention. I often stick to email, because it's something I can leave and come back to. It only takes a few moments; I can pray for someone, jot a note, give a time to meet... and then jump right back into the activities with my kids. I'm so thankful for those of you who understand that. It's not about avoiding anyone, only about being intentional with my time. I answer the phone when it's convenient, but I've never been a slave to it.

And, as much as I love love love to be around people, I'm being very purposeful about keeping most of my evenings free. Us ENFPs are those wacky extroverts that also *need* downtime. In my case, it's creative time. So, in addition to needing downtime and housecleaning time, I also need spouse-time. That just doesn't leave ample time for other things in the evenings. I'm trying to put the big rocks in the jar first (for those who have heard that analogy.)

But don't be confused; my days are still full and fun with the people I love. We have playdates almost every day, plus horseback riding, craft days, field trips.
Then the Rest comes in the evening.
(I'll go to Book Club if/when I actually have time to read the current book. I'll go to Cooking Club, seeing as how I love it and it's only once a month. But I simply cannot go to every birthday party for each friend and each friend's child, or I would never see my own family.)

Anyone else have an overcommitment issue? (sigh)
How do you plan? Do you set guidelines for yourself?

Skirt Challenge week 2

Papaw has all of his stuff moved into his new home now, and a long road of unpacking ahead of him. The kids and I went over to help and look through things the other day, and he loaded me up and sent me home with 8 boxes of Mimi's fabric remnants, buttons, and enough thread to last me a lifetime. I spent the rest of the evening sifting through material and making plans.

This piece jumped right out to me. This is the back side, so you can't tell yet just how vibrant and bold it is.

Fred and I watched Marley and Me, while I whipped up this double-layer full circle skirt for Isabelle. It's my own pattern. Email if you want an idea of how I did it.

I added a zipper and two hook-and-eye closures, for easier dressing and adjustability as she grows.

Plus a matching, reversible headscarf.

I'm lovin' these summer evenings to sew and relax.

In rather related news, my Art Room was in shambles. Stuff everywhere, covering table, chairs, floor. It simply exploded near the end of the school year.
Thankfully, my uncle and Papaw came to the rescue. Papaw bought and Timothy built a beautiful, huge shelf to perfectly fit my 3 1/2 x 8 ft space. I'm in the process of organizing the whole thing...and then I'll show you the amazing difference.

We've also had about 5-6 playdates, plus a trip to the lake, relative visits, a date night, and a Garden Party within the last week. Phew.
Life. Gets. Busy.
My summer already seems to be flying by, and it just started. We have every weekend this month booked up, but it's all fabulously FUN stuff: camping trips, beach trip, Art Nights, you name it. June will be awesome.
I'm soakin' up every moment.

Pillow Case Skirt

Who could resist such a challenge??

I'm all about skirts, you know. Besides being way more comfortable than jeans, skirts are fun to twirl, and make me feel more "at home" with myself. This is who I am. I love to dress up, love to try new things, and love to alter or create anything I can get my hands on.

I made the last skirt from upholstery fabric. Yes, indeed, I did.

Tonight I was looking for a plain skirt to alter. It seems that I don't actually own a plain jane skirt, but there was a pillowcase folded on the couch. The lowly white pillowcase needed a makeover.

And so the fun begins...

Cut off bottom, closed end. Cut a slit in the top hem, and thread elastic through.

Cut up strips of anything you want to use. I thought I'd use another pillow case, but then saw this lace curtain and gauzy yellow fabric. Gather material and sew on. I didn't bother to hem or measure. This is a fun, easy skirt...meant to have a slightly messy, uneven look just-for-the-heck-of-it. Easy, fast. Sewing while watching movies is double the pleasure. I get relaxing time with the Man, while also getting my Craft On.

Trying it on, before sewing up the top.

Finished.
I do need to at least clip the threads off!! And possibly wear a shirt that semi-matches, instead of my tankini.

So many skirt ideas, so little time.
